I’m honestly kicking myself right now because I’ve been ignoring a slight jerk in my 2020 Wrangler when it shifts from first to second for the past couple of weeks, telling myself it was probably just the cold weather or my imagination, but today it was way more pronounced and I could even hear a bit of a clunk that definitely wasn’t there before. I’ve got the 8-speed auto and from what I’ve read online, these transmissions are generally pretty solid but they do have some known issues with the valve body and solenoid packs, especially if you do a lot of off-roading like I do on the weekends. The problem is I’m not exactly rolling in cash right now and I’m terrified that this is going to be a multi-thousand dirham repair that I simply can’t afford. I need to get this diagnosed properly before it turns into a complete failure, so I’m planning to book a Jeep gearbox repair appointment in Musaffah with a shop that specializes in these American 4x4s because I really don’t trust the general mechanics around here who work on everything from Japanese sedans to European luxury cars but have no specific experience with the ZF transmissions. I just want someone who can tell me straight up whether I’m looking at a simple fluid and filter change with a software reset, or if we’re talking about replacing expensive internal components. Also, is it safe to keep driving it in the meantime or should I park it until I can get it looked at? I’ve got a desert trip planned with some friends next weekend and I’m absolutely gutted at the thought of having to cancel. Anyone who’s been through this with their JL and can give me some realistic advice on costs and timelines would be an absolute lifesaver right now.
