Bhaktapur is definitely worth visiting, especially for travellers interested in history, architecture, and a more preserved old-city atmosphere. Compared to Kathmandu’s busy streets and Patan’s urban feel, Bhaktapur feels calmer, more compact, and visually striking.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square is known for its well-preserved palaces, temples, and traditional brick-paved streets. Many travellers find Bhaktapur easier to explore on foot, with fewer vehicles and a stronger sense of stepping back in time. The city is also famous for traditional crafts, pottery squares, and local foods such as juju dhau (king curd).
A visit to Bhaktapur typically takes half a day to a full day, making it an easy day trip from Kathmandu. While it may not replace time spent in Kathmandu or Patan, it complements them well by offering a different pace and atmosphere.
If you enjoy photography, heritage sites, and traditional city life, Bhaktapur often becomes a highlight of the Kathmandu Valley.
